Dr Harry Nespolon was the quintessential GP.
He cared deeply about his patients and for the health of Australians – especially the most vulnerable – and was passionate about his profession.
As one of his patients reflected on his passing, Harry did it all with a ‘sparkling wit’.
As RACGP President, Harry advocated for the central role of general practice in a sustainable health system for all Australians.
Harry displayed extraordinary leadership during his time as RACGP President, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, always working to ensure Australia’s GPs could deliver patients the best possible care.
Some of Harry’s achievements included helping to create simpler, stronger and seamless continuing professional development, and ending the Medicare freeze. He also spoke out in support of some of Australia’s most marginalised patient groups, including refugees and the LGBTQI community.
Unafraid to voice his beliefs on potentially controversial topics, such as mandatory reporting and voluntary assisted dying, Harry was especially vocal on the issue of scope of practice, particularly pharmacy prescribing.
If he felt something would benefit general practice and, by extension, the health and wellbeing of all Australians, Harry would do it.
In response to a call from our members and Harry’s patients, the RACGP is uniting the broader health community to put together a tribute to Harry’s legacy.
The RACGP is establishing a grant, scholarship or similar in honour of Dr Nespolon for the advancement of general practice in the areas that Dr Nespolon was most passionate.
If you wish to make a donation, it will be gratefully accepted.
We look forward to sharing the details of Dr Nespolon’s legacy with you during GP20.
